Introduction to Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the practical application of hypnosis towards specific therapeutic goals. It is scientifically-validated and accepted by the Australian Medical Association and The Australian Psychological Society. Hypnosis is a process used to access various aspects of mind – of which we are not typically conscious – to assist in making the positive changes that you wish to make.

Hypnosis has been defined in many ways. However simply stated hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness characterised by focused imagination and a heightened receptivity to learning, change and transformation.

For a number of sub-clinical issues, including anxiety, pain management, anger management, quitting negative habits, and addictions, hypnotherapy is the most effective, and fastest, therapeutic approach. People find the process of hypnotherapy helps them make remarkable changes in short time. They also find the experience of hypnosis to be extremely pleasant and effective.

In the state of hypnosis the person achieves a heightened level of awareness with increased mental flexibility and receptiveness. In this state unhelpful old perceptions, limiting beliefs and negative self-perceptions are easily released. Conversely one is more open to new perspectives, ideas and perceptions that facilitate, self-acceptance, worth and value.

The success of a hypnotherapy intervention depends on the relationship between the therapist and the client. Just like in conventional therapy or counseling. it is an interpersonal learning-healing process.

“In the state of hypnosis, the person achieves a heightened level of awareness with increased mental flexibility and receptiveness.”

Change vs. Transformation

Change is a slower process that leads you, for example, to give up smoking. Transformation is a faster process that can transform you from a smoker to a non-smoker quickly.

Hypnotherapy - What it is Not

Hypnotherapy is not mind control. Unlike popularised images of dominant powerful stage hypnotists, you’re fully in control when under hypnosis and do not have to take on the therapist’s suggestions if you do not want to. YOU are always there aware of the proceedings and if necessary, you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.

Hypnotherapy is not something that is done to you. It is a process of healing, change and transformation that you and the therapist do together. Hypnosis does not work if you do not want to be hypnotised.
